Violence cuts short rugby blow by blow
Wellington Maori radio station Te Upoko o te Ika has made the finals of E Tu Whanau’s Ann Dysart Kahukura Award for community leadership for refusing to broadcast a rugby game.
General manager Adrian Tangaroa Wagner says E Tu Whanau, which promotes anti-violence kaupapa, sponsors its Footy Show.
That’s why the station refused to broadcast the city’s premier grade final between Tawa and Marist St Pats, as both clubs were involved in on and off field brawls during the season.
“It’s not a god look when some of the members of those teams are going around and actually just inflicting wholesale violence on people without any reason really so we highlighted that,” Mr Wagner says.
