Download AudioMāori Television head Shane Taurima says a change of name for the service reflects a changing media landscape, but not a change in mission.
The service will now be known formally by its Māori title, Whakaata Māori.
Mr Taurima says it was set up as television service, but in recent years it – and its audience – have moved.
“We now offer content across a range of different platforms so the name television doesn’t feel appropriate for the time we are in and the times ahead. I think Whakaata, it really talks about our role which is to promote, to showcase, to exhibit and display the beauty of te ao Māori and to tell our stories,” he says.
