Matangireia – the former Māori Affairs Committee room in Parliament, has been put to sleep so it can be refurbished in time for its 100th birthday in August.
Kura Moeahu from Te Ātiawa, Parliament’s senior Māori cultural advisor, says a ceremony was held this morning by tohunga from Ngāti Rongomai and Te Arawa.
Kura Moeahu says the Ministry for Culture and Heritage is working closely with the iwi on the restoration, including work on the tukutuku panels, which have been knocked around by a century of Wellington earthquakes.
