Broadband roll out leaves kainga in slow lane
Te Taitokerau MP Kelvin Davis wants to get a small Māori settlement into the fast lane.
He says when fibre was being laid between Kawakawa and Moerewa, it went straight by Taumata Makuku, an enclave of about 50 houses on the southern side of the Moerewa freezing works.
“It had an impact during lockdown when children were meant to do schooling from home and parents were meant to work from home and their internet kept cutting out so it was difficult for them to learn and work,” Mr Davis says.
Taumata Makuku residents also want to slow down traffic near the entrance off State Highway 1.
