Rāhui as search continues for drowned fisherman
Te Aupouri kaumatua have declared a rāhui around the North Cape area where a fishing charter sunk on Sunday night.
Five of the 10 people on board the Enchanter were rescued, and the bodies of four others have been recovered.
Te Rūnanga o Te Aupouri deputy chair Peter Lucas Jones says iwi members are assisting in the search for the remaining person.
He says kaumatua Winiata Brown, Robert Kaka and Heta Conrad last night fathered in the shores of Pārengarenga Harbour to lay a rāhui.
“The rāhui extends from Maunga Tohoraha, also known as Mount Camel, all the way to Murimotu, North Cape and round to Te Rerenga Wairua. The Pārengarenga Harbour is also included in the rāhui and the area concerned is in a state of tapu due to the tragic event,” he says.
The rāhui means there will be no fishing or gathering of kaimoana in the area for two weeks or until it’s lifted.
