Rangitihi on track for restoration
The chair of Te Mana o Ngāti Rangitihi Trust says the success of the Bay of Plenty’s historic treaty settlement depends on strong relationships with central and local government.
The settlement legislation passed its third reading in parliament yesterday.
Leith Comer says the iwi will need to work closely with the Department of Conservation to transfer conservation land and restore its mauri.
Cleaning up rivers and wetlands is also on the agenda.
“We have an entity now to set up to restore the mauri of the Tarawera Awa and Te Awa o Te Atua and that is going to require us working closely with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council and three other councils in the area so those are the things now that will test our claim,” Mr Comer says.
