A Charles F. Goldie portrait of a Hauraki chief which has been out of public view for more than a century has sold for $1.7 million at auction.

Hori Pokai – A Sturdy Stubborn Chief was painted by Goldie in 1919 and bought from the studio by war nurse Sibyl Carr for her husband Austin Carr as a wedding gift on his return from World War 1.

International Art Centre director Richard Thomson says it remained in the family until now.

He says it’s not a large painting but it’s an exceptionally fine work by Goldie, and the price to an Auckland buyer sets a new record for the artist.
