Whakatāne District Council has opted to have three Māori councillors from three wards after next year’s local government election.
The Māori seats will be chosen by voters on the Māori roll.
There will be seven general councillors, also from three wards.
Community board member Toni Boynton says it gives Māori candidates a better chance.
“The exciting part is too is knowing that we’re not going to be having to cancel ourselves out to just go for that one general seat,” she says.
