Taitokerau rides wave on event funding

The National Aotearoa Māori Surfing Titles could shift permanently to Te Oneroa a Tohe-Ninety Mile Beach thanks to support from Northland’s Inc’s contestable events fund.

The competition has been a long time event on Taranaki’s calendar, but this year it’s at Ahipara.

The fund is also backing next year’s Waka Ama Nationals in Waitangi, with over 12,000 spectators and participants expected.

Northland Inc destination manager Tania Burt says many applications put up Matariki-themed events, and the fund will work with Bay of Islands Matariki Festival organisers on a Northland-wide approach to the new public holiday.
