Court hears consent fears as marina protest turns ugly
The Ngāti Pāoa Trust Board is hoping for a quick response from the Environment Court to its bid to have the conditions for building a marina at Waiheke adhered to by the developer.
Board co-chair Danella Roebuck says when the consent was originally given there were only a few Kororā or little blue penguins seen in the bay, but there are now more than 30 burrows containing the endangered birds.
"Their breeding season was last month and this is a delicate time for our kororā because it's their feeding season now and our babies so it's a very delicate situation and the council know that, they've got to be careful too," she says.
Yesterday’s hearing came as protesters occupied a construction pontoon on the Kennedy Point site, after a series of scuffles with security guards in which one woman was kicked in the face by a guard.
