$20m to fix boarding school buildings

Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says a $20 million Budget commitment for Māori boarding schools is an investment in the next generation of Māori leaders.
The pūtea will allow the four remaining Māori boarding schools – Hukarere College, St Joseph’s Māori Girls’ College, Te Aute College and Hato Pāora – to address significant property maintenance issues.
Speaking at a Budget breakfast in Hastings this morning, Mr Jackson said the rangatahi who attend these schools live and breathe te reo Māori me ōna tikanga and develop a sense of whanaungatanga that can only be achieved inside these institutions.
The Budget also includes $1 million for Māori statues, such as the one unveiled last year in Panguru of Dame Whina Cooper.
Crown Maori Relations Minister Kelvin Davis says it’s a way to encourage greater national understanding of Aotearoa’s unique Māori culture, leadership and history.
