Manawatu council vote slight on mana whenua

Green MP Teanau Tuiono says Manawatū District Council’s vote to postpone its decision on Māori wards until after the next election is not okay.
Mr Tuiono, who was a community organiser when the council voted for Māori wards in 2017, says the referendum which overturned that decision was driven not by locals but by outside lobby group Hobson’s Pledge, which spread misinformation and encouraged racism.
He says the council seems to see Māori as people to do a karakia when it opens a new building, rather than as partners and kaitiaki of the region.
