Whanganui tries new approach to job creation

A new facility opening in Whanganui today aims to help young people create their own jobs.
LIFT coordinator Leighton Kotuhi-Brown says the hub includes space to run business development training as well as Bounce, a life skills programme.
It also includes retail space to promote and display products developed by the rangatahi businesses.
The initiative is supported by JR McKenzie Trust and Digital Wings.
Over the past two years main benefit numbers for the Whanganui district have increased 11 percent to 5400, and the unemployment rate for 15-24 year old Māori is 18 percent compared with a general unemployment rate of under 5 percent.
