Peppercorn rent gives Rawene campus new life

A Far North district councillor is welcoming a deal with a Rāwene group to re-open a derelict NorthTec campus for community-based education.
The council has leased the Rāwene campus to Te Puna o Kupenuku for five years for $1 a year, with a right of renewal.
Moko Tepania says the site was closed in 2019 after years of cutbacks.
He says it's just the start for Te Puna .
"They've got the lease in place and that gives them the security to be able to go out and say 'we've got this for 10 years. Who want to provide something here?' I know they've been talking with carvers, with weavers, with different community groups who could look at actioning digital literacy. All and all it is really cool," Mr Tepania says.
