Whanau focus in Ngarimu scholarships
The Ngarimu VC and the 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarships are a Gardiner-Parata family affair this year, with Rakaitemania Parata-Gardiner being one of the six scholarship recipients and her father Sir Wira Harawira Gardiner being given the Manakura Award for leadership.
It’s the first time the Manakura Award has been presented since 2018 and comes with a cheque for $30,000.
Ms Gardiner-Parata is studying law at the University of Waikato.
Undergraduate scholarships also went to Isaac Smiler, who is studying medicine and surgery at the University of Otago, and Kirihautu Durie-Ngata who is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Accounting and Māori and Indigenous Studies at the University of Waikato.
Hanareia Ehau-Taumaunu won a scholarship to help towards her study for a PhD in plant pathology at Pennsylvania State University in the United States.
Masters scholarships went to Traci Crawford, who is studying specialist teaching at Massey University, and to Roimata-O-Te-Ora Claasen, which will study for a Master of Business Administration degree at Oxford University in England.
Associate Education Minister and Ngārimu Board chair, Kelvin Davis say there were 115 applications for the scholarships, which have been awarded since 1948 to Māori scholars who demonstrate leadership, a strong commitment to educational success and a desire to give back to their communities, whānau, hapū and iwi.
