Waikato authority says hands off awa grab

Waikato River Authority deputy chair Tipa Mahuta says the awa can't be seen as the answer to Auckland's water woes.
The authority is opposing an application from Watercare to almost double the amount of water it takes every day.
It says the proposed take fails to adequately consider the restoration and protection of the Waikato River, which is the reason the authority was set up.
Ms Mahuta says Auckland's current take is not sustainable as the effects of climate change take hold and the supercity continues to grow.
"If a whole city is relying on one river for its well being into the future, that's not sustainable. You don't have to be a climate expert to know that," she says.
