Eye for a story makes Ra Vincent winner
Production designer Ra Vincent is the winner of this year’s Te Tumu Whakaata New Zealand Film Commission’s Te Aupounamu Māori Screen Excellence Award, which was presented yesterday at the Māoriland Film Festival in Otaki.
Vincent’s work on Jojo Rabbit and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey earned him Academy Award nominations, and his nomination for Te Aupounamu Award was endorsed by Taika Waititi and Sir Peter Jackson.
Waititi says he is any director’s best secret weapon and a true artist, with the ability to bring a page to life right in front of your eyes.
The award includes a grant of $50,000.
Awards of $10,000 were also made to Puti Puti Rā Simich-Pene of production company Roses and Stone and producer Julian Arahanga of Awa Films for their contributions to the sector.
