Tie dies as parliamentary neckware
Green MP Teanau Tuiono is taking his ties back to the op shop now his fellow parliamentarians say they’re not needed.
The Standing Orders committee last night dropped a requirement for ties to be part of appropriate business attire for male MPs, confirming Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi’s dress choice of a hei tiki rather than what he described as a colonial noose.
Mr Tuiono says he had no neck ties when he got to parliament, so Greens co-leader Marama Davidson gave him some of her collection of op shop finds.
"Some of these ties I got from Marama are kind of cool, there's a 70s retro one, I might hang on to that, but the one I got from Farmers for $10, I might just give that one a miss," he says.
Teanau Tuiono says Rawiri Waititi’s hei tiki is a lot more beautiful than his ties.
