Hobson’s hakari to be remembered at Mangungu celebration
Feasting is in order tomorrow in Hokianga as iwi and hapū mark the 181st anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi at the Māngungu Mission Station.
Heritage New Zealand Māori heritage director Mita Harris says it was the largest treaty signing, with 3000 people present.
"The hapū in the nooks and crannies of the Hokianga all come together and met at Māngungu. Governor Hobson, after residing overnight at Māngungu and having a discussion about this treaty, te tiriti, it all came to a conclusion, probably before lunch on the 12th," he says.
Mita Harris says as in 1840, the government will supply the hākari, and there is also a waka regatta to mark the day.
