Fast track for Maori wards bill

The Māori Affairs Committee has not set a closing date for submissions on the Local Electoral (Māori Wards and Māori Constituencies) Amendment Bill – but it has been asked to report back to parliament next Monday.
This bill seeks to amend the Local Electoral Act 2001 to remove the binding polls which have blocked attempts to establish Māori wards or constituencies.
Under the changes councils can still hold a referendum but it would not be binding.
The bill includes a transitional period so local authorities can make decisions in time for the 2022 local elections.
