WENWS 16.12: Nana brings kaitiaki vision to Productivity Commission

The new chair of the Productivity Commission is keen to apply insights learned from Maori to the wider economy.
As director of BERL, Business and Economic Research Ltd, Ganesh Nana has worked extensively with Maori organisations and Te Puni Kokiri to define the Maori economy and identify opportunities.
He’s excited by the mandate from Finance Minister Grant Robinson to look beyond GDP to measure success and to engage with a wide range of New Zealanders.
Dr Nana says at BERL he tried to get people to understand economics and productivity in ways that mean real stuff the real people.
"My model of the economy is we are not here to use resources, we are here to look after them. We are actually kaitiaki of the taonga passed down to us from our forebears and it is our role not to use and extract and make a total mess of those resources, It is our role lo look after them and nurture them and pass them on to future generations," he says.
Dr Nana’s appointment has been criticised by the Taxpayer’s Union, who describes him as left wing and says it’s the last nail in the coffin for the only fiscally conservative public institution left.
