Okareka’s Mana Wahine a dance for trying times


Okareka Dance Company is bringing back its all-female production Mana Wahine by popular demand.
The contemporary dance piece, which was last performed five years ago, draws on the story of Te Aokapurangi, who was able to who saved her Te Arawa people from slaughter after being captured in battle.
Company head Taiaroa Royal says audiences are hungry for genuine spiritual experiences after locked down and isolated.
"With the recent world pandemic and that I think there is a certain wairua the audience will connect with even more because of the experiences we have been going through in the last year," he says.
Mana Wahine will have a three-night run at Auckland's Q Theatre from January 28 to 30, and performances will also be filmed for streaming.
