Sweet words as Honey steps to the sidelines
Women’s rugby league has lost a star with the retirement of Honey Hireme-Smiler after the weekend’s international against Fetu Samoa.
Despite a shortage of fixtures over the years, she has notched up 32 tests for the Kiwi Ferns and four World Cups in her 18 seasons in the code.
Commentator Ken Laban says the international game will be the lesser without her.
"What she has contributed to the game not only here in New Zealand and in Waikato but internationally where she has been a stand out player because of her skill, ability and talent, but it is her leadership that sets her apart from others. Very humble, very gracious, already started to move into the media and television world. She's done it with aplomb," she says.
Ken Laban says he is looking forward to working alongside Hireme-Smiler on the comments bench,
