OMV drill plans upset Taranaki
Climate activists are crying foul over oil giant OMV's plans to resume drilling off Taranaki.
The Austrian company shut down operations in March for the COVID-19 lockdown, but in April announced a positive result from its Toutouwai-1 exploration well.
Urs Signer from Climate Justice Taranaki says iwi and environmentalists are fighting tooth and nail to keep drillers away and protect the environment for future generations.
"OMV is in the top 100 in the world in terms of climate polluters. This is companies like Rio Tinto, Statoil, Shell, Anadarko, OMV is up with those guys in terms of emissions and largely those companies are responsible for our climate crisis," he says.
Climate Justice Taranaki wants the Government to cancel existing exploration permits.
