Labour list MP Louisa Wall is celebrating the size of the rainbow caucus in the new parliament.
A total of 13 MPs – nine Labour and four in the Greens – identify as lesbian or gay.
Ms Wall says at 11 per cent, that reflects the LGBTQI position in society.
“I think it speaks to the fact that we all can walk through life and be proud of our whakapapa which includes our takatapuitanga and it isn’t a barrier to gaining access to parliament which obviously is the place in our country which makes the laws that impacts on so many people’s lives, so we should be celebrating,” she says.
Five of the rainbow MPs are also members of the Māori caucus.
