Diabetes treatments missing Maori
The National Hauora Coalition says a new study on Māori diabetes inequality should be a wake up call for Pharmac to fund new diabetes medicines for Māori and Pasifika patients.
The study by Professor David Simmons published in Lancet Global Health confirmed that despite advances in treatment there has been no improvement in the ethnic disparity in Type 2 diabetes outcomes for more than a quarter of a century.
Coalition chief executive Simon Royal says rather than deliver on its pledge to eliminate inequities in access to medicines by 2025, Pharmac is proposing to impose new criteria that would limit access for Māori and Pacific patients.
