League past president Kaa O’Brien force for reform
Past presidents and members of the Māori Women’s Welfare League are in Te Teko today to farewell Kaa O’Brien, who died on Wednesday.
Current president Prue Kapua says Mrs O’Brien took over the reins at a difficult time after the league had gone through a divisive challenge from Hannah Tamaki and members of Destiny Church who were seeking to use it as a platform of influence.
During her term she reviewed the constitution and developed a new handbook which is used by the league to this day.
"Everybody who knows Kaa will know her contribution on terms of her absolute commitment in terms of te reo and tikanga. Her background in education, I think many tāne will recall her from her Hāto Petera days, she was well known and well respected. She carried that through into the league and she made a great contribution during those three years," Ms Kapua says
Kaa O’Brien’s tangi is at Kokohinau Marae in Te Teko.
