Thriving Oceans Plan response to iwi conservation call
Greens co-leader Marama Davidson says the party’s Thriving Oceans Plan is the boldest marine protection policy from a political party in decades.
It calls for a review of the quota management system, a ban on bottom trawling and other ecologically harmful commercial fishing practices, and putting at least 30 percent of Aotearoa’s oceans into marine protected areas by 2030.
Ms Davidson it offers a way to protect fish stocks and the marine ecosystem for generations ahead and reflects calls from Māori around the motu.
"Taranaki wanting to stop seabed mining, I'm up here in Kaitaia with Te Oneroa a Tohe wanting to stop the impact of commercial fishers on their toheroa beds. We've got Ngāti Porou, Te Whānau a Apanui wanting to stop offshore exploration and mining. Ngāti Whātua and mana whenua in Hauraki Gulf want to clean up that beautiful marine park environment. All around the coutnry Māori have been very clear that we want to protect our fish stocks, our kai, our marine ecosystems for generations to come," she says.
