Predator control to rescue Ngāti Mutunga forest
Northern Taranaki iwi Ngāti Mutunga has secured a $50,000 grant from the Department of Conservation to help it restore a vulnerable forest.
Rūnanga chief executive Paul Cummings says the 1500 hectare Taramoukou Conservation Area forms a natural boundary with Ngāti Maru and Te Ātiawa.
He says the pūtea will pay for tracks and more than 150 predator traps, and the project will also draw on community support.
"We are able to involve some of the public in some of the trapping work as we have those trap lines established and people will be able to experience the beauty of the forests first hand," Mr Cummings says.
