Rangatahi Māori are more likely to use cannabis or be dependent on it than their non-Māori peers.
They're also more likely to be negatively affected by cannabis laws.
That is the message from Reremoana Theodore, the co-director of Otago University's National Centre for Lifecourse Research, University of Otago.
She says many Māori parents and whānau are worried about the impact September's referendum on legalising cannabis will have on rangatahi, so she set out to provide evidence-based information to help inform their voting decision.
The wider determinants of health such as racism and poverty as well as inequities access to health services put rangatahi Māori at higher risk of cannabis use and dependence compared to their non-Māori friends.
