Predator free push at Whangārei Heads
Possums, stoats and rats around Whangārei Heads are on notice.
The Provincial Growth Fund through the Predator Free 2050 initiative is putting $6 million into clearing 10,000 hectares of the Whangārei peninsula over the next five years.
The funding will create 12 jobs.
Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones says it’s a bold project, backing iwi and hapū, landowners and community groups to act as kaitiaki and achieve their vision of a predator free Whangārei.
Kiwi numbers on the peninsula have already increased ten-fold to almost 1000 birds over the last 20 years through community conservation programmes.
