Birth control best Bennett bit
Senior National Party MP Judith Collins says she knew colleague Paula Bennett was eying the exit when she announced she would be a list-only MP.
She says electorates are where an MP’s base is, and once they give them up it’s hard to get back into the swing.
While it’s probably too early to say what Ms Bennett’s political legacy is, it will probably be around the former teen solo mother’s efforts to remake social welfare.
"I thought she did well in promoting long-lasting contraception services for young people, people who were on benefits already, she did well with that and we actually ended up with fewer teen pregnancies when a lot of the rest of the world was going up," she says.
Judith Collins' memoir Pull No Punches is published today, and she says there’s only a little bit about Paula Bennett, and most of it is about herself.
