Kauri sanctuary shows Ngāti Rēhia kaitiakitanga
Ngāti Rēhia says its new kauri sanctuary will be an example of true kaitiakitanga.
The Kerikeri-based hapū has received $6.25 million from the Provincial Growth Fund to establish Aotearoa's first bio-secure sanctuary to fight against kauri dieback.
Rūnanga chair Kipa Munro says the money will pay for planting, pest-proof fencing, boardwalks, improved quarantine stations and training for the iwi members who will manage the Takou Bay sanctuary.
"It comes in line with what our Ngāti Rēhia hapū are trying to do. It's about kaitiakitanga. We can all say we are kaitiaki or this, that or the other, but we want to demonstrate it in a way that is positive and I think this is probably to project that will demonstrate that," he says.
