Jones challenges low expectations in Northland
New Zealand First’s Northland candidate says the region has suffered from low expectations and poor representation.
Shane Jones, who is challenging incumbent Matt King, says National has taken the region because it knows it can win the seat with second rate candidates and not have to deliver anything.
“Here in the north we’ve had under National a culture of low expectations. The roads stay like goat tracks. Rail is closed down. The marine facilities are never as sharp as they can be and we have droughts year after year but for nine long years under National they openly said they don’t believe in regional development,” he says.
Shane Jones says the New Zealand First-Labour coalition has put regional development back on the agenda, particularly as it looks to the regions to drive the economic recovery from COVID-19.
