COVID Budget chance to reset reality for Maori

Waipareira head and Māori Party candidate John Tamihere says this week’s Budget is a chance for a complete reset of New Zealand.
In terms of importance, it could rank with Michael Joseph Savage’s first budget to bring New Zealand out of the Great Depression and lay the foundations for the welfare state, and Roger Douglas’s 1985 Budget that ushered in neoliberal economics.
He says Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has shown she is an outstanding leader in a crisis, and now she has to show she and Finance Minister Grant Robertson can handle a recovery.
"You very rarely get a chance as this Prime Minister has got to reset the national compass, about ensuring we don't take pre-COVID embedded poverty and embedded second class citizenship into a new reality for our Māori people. That is what I’m looking for," Mr Tamihere says.
The Government needs to have faith in Māori people to be funded to address their own needs and priorities.
