Auckland Council has included marae upgrades on a list of 73 priority projects it hopes can get some of the funding the Government is allocating for infrastructure projects.
The Infrastructure Industry Reference Group has asked organisations to identify shovel-ready projects that can start quickly to stimulate the economy and reduce the economic impact of COVID-19.
The list also includes the City Rail Link, the Eastern Busway and the Puhinui Interchange including restoring the Puhinui Stream.
Independent Māori Statutory Board chair David Taipari says as well as geography, Māori were factored in.
"I tried to ensure with the staff who did very good work that Maori outcomes would benefit from those projects, in particular focused around the employment opportunities that come from that, in order to get some economy going as soon as we can post alert level 4," Mr Taipari says.
David Taipari says he’s impressed with the way marae and Maori organisations have stepped up to help their people deal with the crisis.
