Tribes team up for Covid-19 response

Māori tribal authorities are setting up a national pandemic response group to ensure a coordinated Māori response to Covid-19 alongside any government efforts.
Iwi Leaders Group for Climate Change chair Mike Smith says iwi organisations have considerable capacity and skills.
Māori communities can provide relief and effective leadership in difficult situations by mobilising volunteers and skilled health professionals, making some marae available in the event of emergencies, and information sharing through Māori networks.
He says any response must support kaumatua and people with compromised immunity.
That means limiting unnecessary social contact and temporarily adapting tikanga.
