Maori keen for ACC roles
The Accident Compensation Corporation has been told Māori organisations want to form real partnerships rather than being pushed into subcontracting roles at best.
A wide range of Māori organisations met with ACC leadership at Ngā Whare Waatea Marae in Auckland.
Associate Minister Willie Jackson, who called the hui, says he is aware of the longstanding frustration and wants to see the corporation become more responsive.
"The relationships are not strong enough. There is an MOU with Tainui they have and with Waipareria Trust, but they need a lot more than that. We need strong relationships with all the Māori groups out there, and we also need the Māori providers to be given an opportunity in terms of contracts," he says.
Mr Jackson says many Māori work in high-risk industries, and it is important ACC is able to ensure they get the help they are entitled to when things go wrong.
