National Party Northcote MP Dan Bidois says a National Government would keep young Māori from joining gangs by ensuring they are in education, training or work.
National intends to make cracking down on gangs an election issue, citing unconfirmed figures of a 26 per cent increase in gang membership over the past two years and promising special gang-focused police units.
Mr Bidois says he hears from people in his electorate concerned at gang activity in their neighbourhood.
"We’ve got to make sure people don't join these gangs in the first place and I think the only way you can do that is making sure our Māori kids are engaged in education, training or are employed because we know if you are in school, or are in a job, you are not out on the streets causing trouble for your community," Mr Bidois says.
