Ngāpuhi kuia Titewhai Harawira says she’s disappointed by the resignation of rūnanga chief executive Lorraine Toki, but it’s important the iwi has a clean slate to rebuild.
She says Ms Toki has been a hard worker for the iwi, but she was closely associated with former chair Sonny Tau.
She told Radio Waatea host Claudette Hauiti Mr Tau’s sudden unexplained departure in October had created turmoil in the body representing the country’s largest iwi.
“Sonny Tau was the head of everything and you people who are resigning were people that were loyal to whatever he had going and to whatever he said. There's a strong group of Māori women, Ngāpuhi women who are supporting (new chair) Mere Mangu, who are supporting the rūnanga. Ngāpuhi itself, they are saying they want to start with a clean slate, and I support that,” Mrs Harawira says.
Mrs Harawira says there is pressure to replace some hapū delegates supportive of Mr Tau.
