A trust which runs Whangarei’s Food Rescue / Kai Whakaora programme is set to expand thanks to $350,000 from the Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund.
Associate Minister Eugenie Sage says since it started in 2016, One Double Five Whare Awhina Community House Trust food has diverted 22 tonnes of food from landfill, providing meals for almost 17,000 people.
Trust spokesperson Pete Nicholas says the trust is known as the 'avocado people' because one of its first major donors was an avocado packhouse.
It has since signed up retailers, cafes, growers and other suppliers with surplus or leftover food that can be used by churches, soup kitchens, marae, foodbanks and other organisations.
The grant will allow it to set up a second warehouse and sorting facility in Moerewa with longstanding partner He Iwi Kotahi Tātou Trust.
He says its central location in the mid-north makes Moerewa an obvious spot for a distribution centre.
Pete Nicholas says the trust would eventually like to expand into the far north as well.
