Parihaka celebrates reconciliation bill passing
A Parihaka spokesperson says the passing today of Te Pire Haeata ki Parihaka / Parihaka Reconciliation Bill lays the foundation for a better relationship with the crown.
Uri linked to the historic Taranaki settlement were in parliament today to witness the third reading of the Bill.
Ruakere Hond says negotiations were deliberately kept out of the treaty settlement framework, and the $9 million package contained in the bill is seen as an initial amount to raise the capacity of the community to advance the legacy of Tohu Kakahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai, who led non-violent opposition to land confiscation after the Taranaki Wars.
The process has recognised the unique nature of Parihaka, even though we are not an iwi or a hapū, we’re a legacy of a kaupapa that has been left to us by our tupuna," Dr Hond says.
