FOMA welcomes climate change plan
The Federation of Māori Authorities has welcomed today’s Government announcement of a plan for farmers to reduce emissions.
Chair Traci Houpapa says the Government has listened to industry groups and involved FOMA in developing He Waka Eke Noa – the Primary Sector Climate Change Commitment.
FOMA intends to lead the development of a Māori agribusiness response to the impending legislative changes.
Dr Tanira Kingi of Te Arawa Primary Sector said while the Government’s position on He Waka Eke Noa was a good starting point, there was a lot of work for the Government to do to support and resource Māori for the implementation.
He says Māori have significant assets and interests in the primary sector and have shown leadership and proven experience in environmental management through balancing cultural and commercial imperatives.
The five-year joint action plan includes investment in research, development and commercialisation, increased farm advisory capacity and capability, tools for benchmarking emissions from farms and incentives for early adopters.
