Maori needs in PSA Budget surplus wish list

The announcement of a $7.5 billion budget surplus is putting pressure on the Government to spend up large.

The right is calling for tax cuts, and the other side of the political spectrum wants to see it used to address the housing crisis, fund hospitals properly and implement the recommendations of the Welfare Expert Advisory Group.

PSA national secretary Glen Barclay says it's not the time for tax cuts, and New Zealand needs a well resourced government to deal with the social deficit that has built up in recent years as well as future challenged like climate change.

Addressing the needs of Māori is a major part of the picture

"So there needs to be change that does that as well and we've got the review of the health and disability system under way, which we hope will address some of that, the Welfare Expert Advisory Group was very much aware of the place of Maori in terms of employment and those on benefits. The needs of Maori absolutely have to be front and centre," Mr Barclay says.

PSA members want to make a difference and want to see the Government getting on with the job of providing better public services.
