Rafting firm trains Tongariro tangata whenua

Rangatahi in Tūrangi will be able to get a crash course in river guiding thanks to a grant from the Provincial Growth Fund.
The fund’s Te Ara Mahi skills and employment programme is investing $500,000 in the 16-week course run by Rafting NZ.
The aim is to train up 20 new river guides for the company’s Tongariro river rafting business.
Parliamentary Under Secretary for Regional Economic Development Fletcher Tabuteau says the course will have a strong focus on environmental and cultural values and addresses a shortage of skilled guides, especially Māori who have strong links to local iwi Tūwharetoa.
Graduates will have an internationally recognised qualification to work in the industry.
Another $94,000 is going into a Whanganui project to work with schools to create a work ready passport so young people can show employers they have key skills such as communication, managing money, life skills and understanding health and safety at work.
