Former Māori Television cameraman and presenter Nawaia Watene will be one of 22 new constables graduating in Auckland this Māori Language Week.

Between them the new frontline cops speak more than nine languages, including te reo Māori, sign language, Korean, Tongan, Mandarin and Cantonese, Punjabi and Hindi.

Mr Watene is looking forward to using his first language in his police work based in Waitemata.

The 19-week course was one of the first to be done in Tāmaki Makaurau rather than the police college in Porirua, and the graduation ceremony tomorrow is at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau.
