Public Health Association apologises for false statements about Dr Glover
Media Release: For immediate release Thursday 12 September 2019
Dr Marewa Glover, Director of The Centre for Research Excellence: Indigenous Sovereignty and Smoking today welcomed an apology from the Public Health Association of New Zealand following recent comments made by its Chief Executive Dr Prudence Stone about Dr Glover.
In a recent PHA newsletter Dr Stone stated that Dr Glover was influenced by Philip Morris International and that Dr Glover had made false statements to the select committee considering amendments to the Smokefree Environments (prohibiting smoking in motor vehicles carrying children) Amendment Bill.
The Public Health Association of New Zealand has now issued a public apology saying the statements made by Dr Stone were false and that both “Dr Stone and the PHA retract these comments and unreservedly apologise to Dr Glover for the comments made”.
Dr Glover, a Māori behavioural scientist, was recognised earlier this year for her dedication to reducing smoking when she was named one of three finalists in the prestigious New Zealander of the Year Award.

About the Centre of Research Excellence: Indigenous Sovereignty & Smoking In June 2018, Dr Glover founded the Centre of Research Excellence: Indigenous Sovereignty & Smoking after receiving a research-initiated grant from the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World, an independent non-profit organisation whose purpose is to improve global health by ending smoking in this generation. The Foundation has a pledge agreement with Philip Morris International (PMI) that secures funding and ensures complete autonomy to pursue its mission to end smoking in this generation. PMI and the tobacco industry, generally, are precluded from having any control or influence over how the Foundation spends its funds or focuses its activities. Independence is explicitly outlined in the Foundation’s bylaws.
The Centre of Research Excellence: Indigenous Sovereignty & Smoking is an independent limited liability company established in New Zealand. It has a specific focus on accelerating the reduction of tobacco smoking harms among indigenous peoples and building research and intervention capacity in these populations.
