Ngāi Tahu wants treaty terms for water clean up
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu says while the intentions of the Government's action plan on healthy waterways may be good, it fails to acknowledge the crown's treaty responsibilities or reflect the findings of the Waitangi Tribunal's stage two water report.
Freshwater spokesperson Te Maire Tau says more than 75 percent of all irrigated land in New Zealand is in Canterbury and Otago.
He says the iwi wants to talk directly with the crown about solutions that work in its takiwā, and it has done extensive research on science-based systems for water management that satisfy iwi, recreation, users and farmers.
