Whanganui iwi will sign an agreement in principle to settle their claims at Pūtiki Marae today.
Kahurangi Simon says it has taken longer than expected, with a lot of robust discussion required.
He say negotiations have been like the river, with long slow periods mixed with shoals and rapids, but the iwi negotiations have been guided by the values of their tūpuna.
"Very key to our approach is around a values-based relationship with the crown and resetting that relationship, first and foremost with the whenua itself, with the people and the crown and how we all fit with one another. There certainly is no one size fits all," Mr Simon says.
