Big turnout keeps Tau in Ngapuhi seat
Ngapuhi Runanga chair Raniera Tau has survived a challenge for his seat on the runanga, with high voter turn-out in the Hauauru takiwa putting him ahead of challenger Clinton Dearlove by 169 votes.
The result means he is certain to retain leadership of the body which administers the northern tribe's fisheries settlement and represents it for Resource Management Act matters.
It also has social and health services.
Mr Tau acknowledged Mr Dearlove's campaign and says he has never taken his position for granted.
